I Shaved My Head When Robert Stanfield Died

"...because Canadian politics is a baffling mystery that, when explained, still doesn't make sense, and has no bearing on anything." -Commenter on a Diefenbaker YTMND I made

Sunday, March 12, 2006

I know I'm moving fast, but this is heavy stuff:

"I did not join the British Army to conduct American foreign policy,"

-Ben Griffin SAS Officer.

Mr. Griffin said he had witnessed, "dozens of illegal acts," by US troops, claiming they viewed all Iraqis as "untermenschen" - the Nazi term for races regarded as sub-human.

Anyone who decries the treatmet of prisones after serving in Ireland (feck Northern Ireland... I'ts one fecking country. Look at a map!) gets my attention.

Wow! If only something like that would come from a Canadian officer! That is gold!

I have been reading your blog for a while, and, while I may disagree with some (most) of what you say, I do find your perspective interesting (I left Canada prior to the PC/Reform merger, at the age of 15 with my family, so I am interested what former P.C.'ers have to say about it, especially now that the new party is forming a government).

However, one thing I find a little troubling is your slightly anti-American slant (though, I will admit that "Right of 'Center' Ice" is more so (which is why the spelling of "center", rather than "centre" is somewhat ironic), it's set up so only fellow bloggers may comment, so that is why I am commenting here, rather than there). I put my comment on this post because it is a mild example of this, though, I must admit, you are somewhat measured and responsible in your criticism of American policy, compared to a lot of other blogs, and that is certainly your right.

Given the title of your blog, I gather you are an admirer of Robert Stanfield, so I thought I would pass along a link which speaks directly to U.S./Canada disagreement - a speech from the man himself: http://www.empireclubfoundation.com/details.asp?SpeechID=1983&FT=yes
The whole speech is excellent, and it is an example of Stanfield at his best, but I would like to point out his comments from about the middle of the page down - from "In other words, we can and we must develop policies that are pro-Canadian without being anti-American." I hope every "Red Tory" has the chance to look at it, since it lays out Stanfield's and the old-school Red Tory position perfectly.

Full disclosure time: When I lived in Canada, I was a card-carrying memeber of the Reform Party, and I am now a member of the Republican Party. However, my family and I have always opposed free trade, and many of the laissez-faire policies widely practised in the U.S. (employment "at-will" and "right to work" being prime examples). The main reason we went Reform was because of Kim Campbell and her gun control policies. Down here, as a "social conservative/economic moderate", many people look at me somwhat funny, whereas in Canada, this would place me in the (old) Conservative mainstream (albeit the Right-side of the spectrum).

Anyway, I find your blog interesting, but I just thought I'd pass on the link to a most excellent Stanfield speech on Canada/U.S. relations when the two countries' interests conflict.
